We were close/already there with the Cyberboard module. I have set up a permanent server specifically for CNA but I am moving away from the concept of a shared positioning system. We could even do it with confirmatory photos, posted to and displayed by the program. I have no trouble keeping the game setup on my magnetic board, which are stored on a clothes hanging rail.

The only concern Id have with photos is that it makes it a bit hard to inspect the board, particularly in the case of stacks of counters. Id like to at least register my preference, if possible, towards having a system where we can freely inspect the board without having to send off requests for additional photos, or similar.
If the goal is to keep things as simple as feasible, then perhaps an equally similar option would be having the server have a copy of a VASSAL save file? We could download the save and run it locally, to inspect the board. This would also be much smaller file sizes than downloading photos.
If the server is dedicated, and has a graphics unit, it may be possible to set it up as a host computer for VASSAL. That would make play very simple, but would require more setup than just uploading a save file using FTP. Its also possible that is something that could be worked towards - we could start out with photos, or using a VASSAL save file on the server, and look at moving towards having the server run VASSAL and hosting the VASSAL module itself.

The problem is that I know next to nothing about Vassal. The server has already taken up a great deal of development time in system software, so that it is robust enough to work flawlessly, no matter what happens to user connections.
I was being a bit tongue in cheek about photos - I should perhaps have focused on the fact that players can/should/must set up the positions, using the map and counters.
At the moment, the priority has to be the completion of the application development. There's been a monumental amount to do. An expert in Vassal, who could take care of all that side of stuff would be great; I just can't afford to move my focus from the main system. : )

Hello,
Anybody besides the Russians still alive out there? I've restarted my Graziani's Offensive yet again. I'm getting much better as the CW player and have finetuned my Italian 1st attacks. Definately need a few rule tweaks as I annihilate the CW border forces. At least the CW have a chance at holding Mersa Matruh. Hopefully someday we will have a multiplayer CNA.

I've had my head down coding the system. Almost there (sounding like a parrot, I know).

Good to know your alive and coding. I would like access to your updated rules, if possible. I'm working changes also, as some rules just dont go right.

Just thought I'd update any who care. I just finished another solo play of Grazianni's Offensive. Things went interesting enough and my modified rules went well enough that I finally decided to not restart the scenario but continue on through O'Conner's Offensive.
I found it interesting (to me at least) that in massively micromanaging Italian Logistics I was able to keep the offensive up to Mersa Matruh. Not strong enough to frontal assault a well defended MM but I realized, as the Italian that the terrain around MM is not very defensable against an attack from the west (lots of downslopes) So I elected to attack any CW units trying to protect the flank of MM. As the CW player it is just not feasable to defend terrain against a supplied Italian Army, so I withdrew from MM to, surprise - El Alamein. As the Italian I advanced past MM to form a Defense line and just cannot get my Army supplied enough to resume the Offense - Im barely keeping them fee and watered. I now know how the Italains felt at Sidi Barrani. The Italians are trying to build up their supplies to resume the offense, while the CW is building up their strength to start an offense. Sound familiar?
As the Italian, I do not see how I can continue an attack towards Alexandria. I dont want to give up my gains. The terrain is to my advantage. I just hope I can withstand an attack by 4 CW divisions. Maybe I can be successful in a fighting withdrawal. I am worried though. The CW divisions are motorized while mine are on foot. I did make both the Aresca and Trivoli Bdes into mobile fire Bdes. The Italians have Artillery superiority and Air supremacy. Nov will be no attacking but building supplies and strength.
